The Cache River basin is located in the extreme southern tip of Illinois near the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Because of its unique location at the junction of major rivers and physiographic regions, the basin exhibits some of the most diverse natural wetland communities in the state. Concurrent with the slackwater fish survey, IDNR Fisheries surveyed 17 sites in the Cache River watershed as part of their Intensive Basin Survey five-year rotation from May through August of (Figure 2). The most appropriate fish sampling gear (e.g., boat electrofishing, seines, or electric seines) was used to : Jodi M. Vandermyde, Steven Shults. In fringed darters were found in six streams in the lower portion of the Cache River basin but were absent at many other sites within the basin (Poly and Wilson, , unpublished data).Modifications to streams in the Cache River basin, including channelization and removal of riparian vegetation, have resulted in degraded aquatic habitats (Lopinot, , Illinois Natural History Survey Cited by: Arkansas Academy of Science Proceedings, , 56 The Problem of Site DefinitioninCulturalResource Management HOUSE, J.H. and M.B.
